It has always been known the law profession is a prestigious career. It is a position of power, and in many instances, quite prosperous. However, the truth of the matter is the economic downturn has dampened the hopes and dreams of thousands of hard-working law students all over the country. Not even the best of the best second or third year law students have had their fair chance to get hired.
As an attorney search consultant, I can assure you that the past year and a half has been quite a challenge for not only attorney placement, but law students have also had to face the dilemma of what to do next. Many law firms have been forced to reassess their growth endeavors and have had to discontinue their respective summer associate programs. Some law firms have even had to rescind on job offers made to law students or recent graduates because of the economy as well.
Although firms and companies have tightened their belts with regard to attorney hiring, there is newfound hope on the horizon for law students and attorneys as well. That said, if you are a law student and are experiencing doubt about finishing law school and pursuing a law career, do not let this economic hardship dissuade you from accomplishing your goal. Try your best to stay positive. Focus on your studies and continue to network aggressively. The legal marketplace is picking up slowly, but note when the upturn really does come, you will be in a better position to get the dream job you studied so hard for. Best of luck!
