Today's Job Stresses

By Wendy Oliveras on Sunday, October 18 2009

Unfortunately, reality has taught us all that due to the economic downturn, many companies have had to shut their doors, imposed hiring freezes, or downsize their workforce. As a result of this catch-22 market situation, thousands of people have lost their jobs and in many cases, their homes. And this is America folks -- the land of opportunity!

The odds are very high that you find yourself or know someone who is or was recently laid off, fired, or seeking a new job for better benefits and pay. This downturn certainly has caused an economic disaster in all sectors and industries. No one has been immune to its devasting grasp. Sometimes it even feels as if no matter how many college degrees or relevant work experience one has, the more one begins to feel incomplete and somehow a bit worthless. The truth of the matter is that the red flag has been raised, and we can continue to expect many more job applicants to hit the pavement for new jobs. Thus, making the job market even tighter for everyone and producing much more competition in the marketplace.

Regardless of all the negativity and bad karma that floats in the air, try your best to not let these circumstances impede on your real goal, i.e., focus on you and your job search. There are some hints of improvement in the economy and things seem to be slightly moving upward. In the interim, remember that everyone has something different to bring to the table. It is no secret that a job search can be time consuming, but have faith in yourself, be patient, and take advantage of all of your networking resources. Talk to everyone you know, because chances are, someone knows someone who knows someone. In going forward, think positive and persevere. Have a professional or someone you trust to review your cover letter and resume before you send it out to a prospective employer. Remember, Rome was not built in one day. Things are going to get better...good luck!
